While not in the usual genre that is popular among Singaporeans, I hope the music itself will strike a chord in the hearts of those who are moved by the thread topic. Miyuki Nakajima (中島 みゆき) - Sora to Kimi no Aida ni (空と君のあいだに; Between the Sky and You) from the 1994 J-Drama Ie Naki Ko (いえなきこ; Child Without a Home) This is a rare cover of the song by Anri Kumaki (熊木 杏里) which I feel is much better, not to mention more romantic, than the original by Nakajima. It was apparently done impromptu at a live performance and there are no other recordings of it I can find. This pop classic was also covered by cantonese and mandarin artistes as well. Used to play it on piano all the time back then... was crazy about it :p A truly well-written song. English translation for the lyrics can be found here. |

Given the horrendous state of my Mandarin (let alone Cantonese) it should come as no surprise that I initially believed the song title to mean "Legend of the Flying Female" :eek: Thanks to some helpful friends, I've since been corrected. Jokes aside, this is probably one of the best-written (although not the catchiest or most popular) mando-pop song ever written. From a technical point of view, the composer really knows his shit. The number of complex chord shifts and key changes far exceed that encountered in the average rushed-out pop song. Mr Jay Chou has come close in several of his singles, but not quite met this standard. I suspect his producers might have interfered though -- the more complex a composition, the less popular it usually is with the masses. This is an old classic that has been covered by several other artistes as well, I've come to learn. Beautifully sad lyrics and harmony. I almost always play this song in analog mode at every trip to a local pub or ktv facility. |
