Re: Macau or Zhuhai

The Arrival : at Macau International Airport

Three and a half hours of agony…. That’s how I would sum up my flight. The Plane landed without any delay and once I stepped out of the aircraft’s doorway, I had this nice feeling that I was finally on a real holiday. The weather was fantastic, air-conditioned temperature…. The air smelt sweet, even though I was standing right beside the fuel tank of the 180-seater Airbus A320 and behind the exhaust of the running taxiway shuttle bus waiting to ferry us to the immigration checkpoint. It was then about 2.00 p.m. when we queued up to have our passport stamped by the Macau authorities. It was almost 2.30 p.m. when we cleared the immigration and collected our luggage. Once out at the reception lobby of the arrival terminal, we headed straight out to the main road (car pick up point) and puffed away. Hey!!!! That’s the bus stop for service AP1 right in front of us! That’s the service that will take us to the immigration and customs checkpoint into Zhuhai, China. That’s the transportation recommended in one of the postings in the “Macau or Zhuhai” thread. Not bad!!! So far…so smooth….. Boy….was I wrong!!!!!

The charges for the bus fare were MOP 3.30 per person (MOP=Macau dollars, it is almost the same as the HKD and the RMB) and MOP 3.00 per luggage. That works out to be MOP 6.30 per person, approximately S$1.40 per person. That’s CHEAP!!!!! There is a signboard that shows AP1 and some footnotes that says RMB not accepted. So, for those guys who want to take this bus service, please get your denominations in order.

Just before I could finish my cigy, the “limousine” came. As I had in hand some HKD loose change, I offered to pay the bus fare for everyone. Brother H030831, being a typical engineer (you can tell by his nick in SBF), offered to pay his own share and he almost handed me HKD 63.00. Lol….. Guess he must also be in a real holiday mood. Come to think of it, I can’t really blame him for being generous….. this is indeed the cheapest fare I had to fork out for any transport that I have ever taken in all the airports I have ever laid foot on.

Once the bus started moving, brother DunNoLah plucked out his mobile and started to call Brother Jinger. As brother Jinger was already in Zhuhai and arrangements were made earlier through email to meet, we had to call him to confirm on the timing to catch the transport to Chang Ping together in Zhuhai. “NAUBEI!”, that was the cry of brother DunNoLah in the half packed bus. “ NOW YOU TELL ME”….. You see, what transpired in the phone conversation was that brother Jinger, without knowing that we were already in the AP1 bus, told us to take the taxi (to Zhuhai immigration) instead. So, here goes the warning….

** Important: DO NOT….. I repeat, DO NOT take the AP1 bus service. The journey takes one hour to reach the checkpoint. The taxi fare for the same journey would only cost around MOP50 plus. That works out to be about S$10.00. Shared between a few persons, it would cost less than a BigMac in Sillipore. Even if you would to be traveling alone…….. S$10.00 is well worth it!!!!! And here’s the cruncher…. The journey will take less than 10 minutes. Yes!!! Only 10 minutes.

Boh Bian….. Already in the bus…what to do? I leaned back and started to tell myself to enjoy the trip even though I was already lamenting what I would have been able to acquire with the additional 50 minutes saved from choosing the right transportation mode. 50 minutes….. I could have created some miracles in Chang Ping….Haiz…..

To be fair, the bus ride was quite comfortable. Looking at the interiors of the bus, it reminded me of the old OMO bus operations in Singapore where you had to “Tong Lui” into the gadget towered beside the bus driver before you can move on to take your seat. They also had this “bar strip” bell on the ceiling where you had to, as a little boy then, ask someone taller to depress the rubber strip to sound the “ I want to alight at the next bus stop” notification.

The hour long bus journey will first take you to some housing estate where most of the condominiums are located. You will also see some very nice bridges over the ocean linking up the few islands of Macau…. mmmmm….am I right here? You will then see the Macau Tower, which is supposed to be a tourist attraction, where you can do some real nice sight seeing and some kind of bungee jumping thingy. The bus will then move on the central district where most of the casinos are located. There is one thing that was very interesting that I noticed here. This district seems to be full of “Hor Lees” – the card dealers in the casinos. Hehehe…. It was quite a sight to behold…. So many of them…. All dressed in the same type of outfit… white shirt, black pants, black vest…. You see them at every 20 metres or so, some shopping, some walking, some holding hands…… just amazing. You will also see some tall buildings, “Lisboa” and “Sands” being the more popular casinos there. For about 30 minutes, the bus will move around the same area, you will know… because you will see the same buildings over and over again… just different angles, that’s all. After a while, in the same busy district, the bus will move into an underpass, into something like an underground car park ….. and presto…. You are now at the exit point of Macau to Zhuhai.

* I will post some pictures of Macau (after I get it from another brother) before I continue with the "crusade of the Macau-Zhuahai customs:
