Usually 9/10 times is just sms for first timers.
Just take note for iPhone users sometimes this automatically turns into iMessage, so this can become a problem if u are sharing ur Apple account with other devices and turn on sync with iCloud etc (heard of a guy kena this and found out by other half before). Also with iMessage sometimes the message not sent through in time to the girl in time (not sure why had that in the past).
If she prefers other modes she will tell you to wechat for example. I never use WhatsApp. Line is not popular for PRCs it’s either sms or wechat
