I feel that communication is very important between the the guy's mother and his wife. Both must be able to communicate under a common language. Most mothers speak mandarin and it will be very much easier if the wife speaks mandarin. Most often, conflicts or misunderstanding arises from failure to communicate. My mother has always told me that she hopes to have a daughter-in-law that can speak mandarin, so when my mum met my wife in Saigon several years ago, they hit off quite well. The next is that its always better not to stay under the same roof. This is personal experience, move out and stay alone with your wife, it will be easier for your wife and mum. The wife must also be able to `curry favour' the mother in law. Old folks like sweet mouth daughter in laws..... . The most important thing is when wife and mum fight, the son/husband is always in the most difficult position.
