There's nothing embarassing with checking the bill. The Thais do it as well. Scrutinising the bill is to signal to the establishment you're not a carrothead especially if you intend to be a regular patron.
If cannot see in the dark just bring along those keychain mini torch. That'd would be really professional. Haha. Might buy one today in HCMC.
