Its an old scam but is still practiced there. Another recent and more damaging scam is planting drugs in your room/ belongings and calling in the cops. She will then disappear and you are in for a hard time. There is one proven case where a guy paid more than RM100k and still need to serve 6 months in jail. So its better to book thru mamasan, treat them well and you will not have any unnessary hassle.
