Like what some bros mentioned before, showing off is part of the viet culture. To be able to show their fellow villagers that they have a foreigner bf is prestigious, as foreigner = $$$$. When i first married my wife, she told me that the house i built for her parents in the village gave her a lot of face. I thought `what the shit, i am poor enuff and i still need to look for money to help your parents build house' . The many years in VN also gave me good insight to their culture. For example, my younger BIL was so proud when he first got a driving license. I was talking to my friends about cars, and he was so excited and acted like he know so much. The fact is that he didn't have much schooling and this driving license gave him a sense of achievement and he just wanna show it off to others. Its also part of their culture for gals to show off their jewels . To have a diamond ring, a gold necklace etc is a proud thing and they just wanna show them off. My wife's uncle and his wife has been working in Saigon for quite some years. RFecently, they started to build a house in the village. Do not know why they need to build such a big house, but the house has no windows and doors, because they do not have enuff money for them. My wife told me the reason for such a big house was because he wants to show off to fellow villagers. So if you wanna be with a viet gal, you got to accept this.
