Hi bro. Don't mean to start anything but I must stress that Manila is not like Singapore. Honestly we are very safe here - go out at 3am alone and no one will disturb you. But there you go out at alone at night its asking for teh wrong kind of attention. Especially since we are so used to the safety here we let our guard down very easily. Frankly I think our Army also too comforatble and nuah because we are untested and have never fought anyone. But that is another issue.
Like bro etsys said, its damn easy to get guns there. The favroutie there is a 0.45 which can be as cheap as USD60 only. And lots of people carry knives. My friend kena before. It's not like what you see in the movies where the mugger threaten you with a knife first then take your money. A common tactic there is they stab you first, disable you, THEN they take your money. My friend was stabbed in the arm without warning. The mugger just attack - didn't ask for money or anyting first. But my friend fought back so scared off the guy.
Don;t forget: these guys rob people for a living. If they are stupid, they and their families go hungry. Better not underestimate their tactics. Many work in groups. Once kena surrounded by 2-4 guys, unless you fight better than Bruce Lee, you better run faster than Usain Bolt.
But pui kia like me jia lat lah - can't run and can't fight. Best is stay out of trouble and be safe.
