Not all places in Btm are well litted.....there are certain areas even in Nagoya or Jodoh that are still secluded.
Precautions are still needed.

I am bule, so I am definitely rarer than Chinese in Batam. People does look at me, but just to say hi and smile to me, or to ask money, or to offer services, depending on the circumstance. No areas are "secluded" to me, at night or day.
As far as I show respect for locals, locals do respect me. In my 11 visits to Batam so far (each lasting 3-7 days), I never felt in danger or experienced something unconfortable.
It's not the physical look, but the way we behave that may attract unwanted attention.
