KL Spa manager charged with trafficking women

KUALA LUMPUR: A spa manager pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to trafficking two Indonesian women by forcing them to work as prostitutes, two weeks ago.

Phang Chee Kung, 56, from Cheras, allegedly committed the offence in front of Room 210, Golden Asean Hotel at No 520-522 Jalan Pudu, Dang Wangi at 7.05 pm on Dec 7.

The accused, who was arrested on the same day, was charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 which carries a sentence of up to 15 years imprisonment and possible fine upon conviction.

DPP Nurul Ashiqin Zulkifli applied for a bail of RM20,000 with one surety but Phang, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lesser sum saying he had diabetes and hypertension which required medical attention.

Judge Rozilah Salleh set bail at RM15,000 with one surety and fixed Jan 11 2012 for remention pending his appointment of counsel.
