Minor train disruption on Sunday morning along NSL due to signal fault
Published on 2018-07-01 by Martha Soezean A minor train delay occurred this morning (1 Jul) along the North South Line (NSL). According information shared on Twitter platform, the delay was caused by a 0signaling fault. There was no official information from SMRT; only posts on social media informed on the delay: Alvin Lee, on TATA SMRT platform at 8:25am wrote: "North South Line - Signalling Fault Yio Chu Kang - Khatib Additional 15 minutes travelling time due to Signalling Fault. (Station announcement)." John Robert Lee shared a post from MRT Singapore Service Information on the same platform at 8:29am; he wrote: "Signal failure between Khatib and YCK, causing delays to NSL service. +15 mins of travelling time at the mentioned stretch, towards MSP." link : https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/201...-signal-fault/ SMRT service is still SO GOOD . PAP is SO GOOD . ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: 2 young lives lost
SMRT Trains posts loss of $86m in FY2018
Published 6 hours ago Lower ridership and higher maintenance costs hit business even as train reliability improves Adrian Lim Transport Correspondent Reliability on two of SMRT's rail lines is improving, but higher maintenance costs and falling ridership are hitting the company's train business. In the financial year ending March 31, trains on the East-West Line travelled about 13 per cent longer on average before encountering a delay of more than five minutes. The Circle Line more than doubled its mean kilometres between failures, compared with the previous financial year. But while reliability is up, the finances are in the red. In its annual operations review report published yesterday evening, SMRT Trains posted an after-tax loss of $86 million in FY2018, on the back of lower ridership and fare revenue, coupled with higher maintenance-related expenses. In the previous financial year, SMRT Trains made an after-tax profit of $26 million. Operating expenses for FY2018 hit $838 million, up by 7 per cent from $785 million in the previous financial year. Meanwhile, revenue dipped by 6 per cent, falling from $791 million to $743 million. This was due to lower average fares arising from a fare reduction exercise, as well as a 2 per cent drop in total ridership on SMRT's network, from 768 million to 753 million. Last year, the North-South and East-West lines saw a drop in ridership, and experts have said this could be due to the opening of the Downtown Line 3 last October, which offered commuters alternative travel routes to the eastern part of Singapore. The growing popularity of private-hire car services and the service disruptions on the North-South Line, due to teething issues from the implementation of the new signalling system, were also cited as factors why fewer commuters took the train. SMRT Trains also said more than half of every dollar it collects from commuter fare revenue now goes to rail maintenance-related expenditure. "This refers to rail maintenance staff costs, parts and material costs, depreciation of rail assets and other rail maintenance-related operating expenses," it said. Asked about SMRT Trains' losses, Singapore University of Social Sciences transport economist Walter Theseira said: "The issue with a public transport company is that the firm can't really raise revenue except by asking for fare increases. "Ridership isn't something they can affect directly. So I expect that if this loss continues, we may need government subsidies to keep the system operational." link : https://www.straitstimes.com/singapo...-86m-in-fy2018

Re: 2 young lives lost
SMRT: Time to raise fares
July 1, 2018 Newly-nationalised public transport operator SMRT has just posted its first loss since inception. In a press release, SMRT published in it’s annual operations review report that the state-owned company saw a S$86 million loss due to a rise in operating expenses. The state-owned company also complained about falling ridership and fare prices, and signalled that fare prices will increase. “ “This was due to lower average fares arising from a fare reduction exercise, as well as a 2 per cent drop in total ridership on SMRT’s network, from 768 million to 753 million… More than half of every dollar collected from commuter fare revenue now goes to rail maintenance-related expenditure. “This refers to rail maintenance staff costs, parts and material costs, depreciation of rail assets and other rail maintenance-related operating expenses.” State media Straits Times immediately contacted PAP-linked academic “transport economist” Thesiera Walter who commented that fare prices will need to increase: “ “The issue with a public transport company is that the firm can’t really raise revenue except by asking for fare increases. Ridership isn’t something they can affect directly. So I expect that if this loss continues, we may need government subsidies to keep the system operational.” SMRT however posted fake news about the state of rail reliability by using the government’s skewed rail reliability indicator, Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF). The Singapore duopoly train operator said the trains on East-West Lines have travelled 13% longer on average before encountering a delay of more than five minutes. The Circle Line was alleged to have “doubled” it’s MKBF in the past year. The government’s MKBF however does not account for the amount of down-time, with the severity of a 8-hour breakdown similar to that of a half-hour breakdown. SMRT also deliberately broke up the MKBF indicator into various train lines, to isolate the worse-performing lines like the Bukit Panjang LRT from the better-performing train lines. According to SMRT in a previous financial report, train breakdowns resulting from signal-related problems are not counted as they are “project-related” disruptions. The train lines today also saw shorter operating hours, with Sunday shutdowns and occasional stop service. There is also no measurement on the company’s response during a train breakdown incident, with many commuters reporting negatively on paid train replacement bus services. The Singapore authorities also do not publicly publish it’s calculations of the MKBF, and the public has to blindly rely on government-released figures. link : http://statestimesreview.com/2018/07...o-raise-fares/

Re: 2 young lives lost
Despite under the rail financing model .
Despite LTA taking over the ownership & maintenance of the transport network . Despite a monopoly on the market . How is that SMRT can still report a loss ??? Afterall SMRT just need to provide a reliable and safe transport network isn't it ? This further proves that ex-army generals or ex-navy admirals do not know about managing a business entity . So you still want to raise fares ? Do you think it is fair to your commuters ? Do you think we commuters are stupid ? ![]()

Re: 2 young lives lost
Singaporeans challenge SMRT Trains’ claim that hefty S$86m loss is due to declining ridership
By Jewel Stolarchuk - July 2, 2018 SMRT cited a decline in ridership and higher maintenance expenses as it posted a hefty S$86 million after-tax loss for the 2018 financial year ending Mar 31, on its website yesterday. The hefty loss comes after the transport operator recorded a post-tax profit of S$26 million in the last year. Reporting that ridership fell from 768 million to 753 million, with average weekday ridership dropping from 2,353 to 2,258, SMRT Trains posted that revenue took a hit due to this fall in ridership and lower average fares and went down to S$743 million from S$791 million the previous year. Meanwhile, operating expenses climbed from S$785 million to S$838 million, apparently due to higher maintenance costs. Besides this, SMRT Trains’ CEO Lee Ling Wee noted that the company “recognises that commuter satisfaction has declined in the last year”. He added: “Learning from the 7 October tunnel flooding episode, we have tightened work processes and supervisory checks across all levels in the organisation, and will use resources more effectively as we get our renewal and maintenance efforts firmly back on track in building infrastructure and facilities management.” Singaporeans reacting to the hefty loss, however, did not appear to be too assuaged by Lee’s assurances. more at : http://theindependent.sg/singaporean...ing-ridership/ This is just another excuse for the PAP government to increase transport fares even when the mrt service is still so fucked up .

Re: 2 young lives lost
They save so many millions (or billions) on maintenance over 30 years, now things start to breakdown because of lack of maintenance over the years. Now spend a bit only kpkb. Why don't they stop operating and revert back to buses.

768 M to 753m
Read the report again. Reduction din say during peak hour or off peak. Time segment it, reduction could be off peak. Speed is not important, bus better. Drop 15m ride, per yr. 753m ride, 365 day per yr, About 2m ride per day. Translate to 1m people take mrt. Mrt station close for few days. And close early. Must consider. Close 8 days ,16m ride gone Last edited by sionglim; 04-07-2018 at 12:22 AM. |
