Something in the Circle Line tunnels is interfering with signalling communication between trains and track, and operator SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have yet to determine exactly what it is.

The problem, unheard of since the driverless line fully opened five years ago, has caused slower trains and longer waits since Monday. On Tuesday, SMRT said the fault had to do with intermittent loss of wireless communication between the signalling equipment on the trains and signalling equipment on the track.

Pressed for more information, SMRT and the LTA issued a joint statement yesterday saying that there was "possible signal interference in (the) tunnels". But neither could say what sort of interference it was or what was causing it.

The Straits Times understands that the glitch - which one senior SMRT engineer described as a "phenomenon" - could be related to a software issue or caused by interference from telecommunication equipment.

The system underwent a software upgrade recently. Suspecting that might be the cause, the operator uninstalled new software but the fault persisted.

What is befuddling SMRT engineers further is that the loss of signalling communication is intermittent. When a train loses communication, it applies emergency braking as a safety precaution. This has caused journeys to be not only longer, but also jerkier.

System software experts from French contractor Alstom, which supplied the signalling system, are due to arrive soon to look into the glitch.

Going by the slew of public tweets, some trains may also be bypassing stations. Ardawan Izadi said he caught a train on Tuesday which had to reverse when it missed a stop. Mohan Mahapatra posted: "Today's train forgot to stop at Holland Village station."

According to sources, SMRT is now manning the driverless system. In some situations, the trains are driven manually at speeds as low as 18kmh to the next nearest station so that the signalling system can be "reset".

Signal fault slows down Circle Line for the 5th day running

SINGAPORE - Morning rush hour on the Circle Line was marked by delays for the fifth straight day on Friday (Sept 2), as rail operator SMRT's unresolved signalling fault continues to plague train service.

SMRT tweeted at 6.13am that commuters should expect longer journeys on the line due to the "intermittent signalling issue" that was first reported on Monday.

About an hour and a half later, at 7.49am, it cautioned commuters to expect "longer dwell times" as trains waited to pull out of stations.

Commuters have been reporting slow train service, sudden braking, stalled trains, crowded station platforms and poor communication since Monday morning, even as SMRT said in a joint statement with the Land Transport Authority on Thursday that it was "working round the clock" to fix the problem.

The commuters to whom The Straits Times spoke on Friday said that they have seen an improvement in how the problem is handled since its onset, but their journeys have still been marred.

Secondary school student Marcus Liow, 16, usually takes the train from Cashew to Bishan to get to school, although Friday is a school holiday because of Teachers' Day.

"The train journey to school look longer the last few days, maybe about 10 to 15 minutes more," said Marcus.

"On one of the days, I think it was Tuesday, the arrival time for the train was not even stated on the board. I was not really irritated but it was a bit warm cause the trains were also more crowded."

Still can't solve the problem ? Can the SMRT assure the commuters that it is safe to travel on its trains ? If someone gets injured while taking a ride on its trains will SMRT take full responsibilities ?

Already 5 days still cannot solve the problem . Can Desmond Kuek and his management team please resign and take full responsibility ? It is time for new leadership change at SMRT since the current leadership can't solve the problem.

SINGAPORE - Commuters on the Circle Line will not be able to use their mobile devices at Kent Ridge, Haw Par Villa, Pasir Panjang and Labrador Park stations between 7pm and 9pm on Friday (sept2) evening.

In a joint announcement made at 6.38pm, the Land Transport Authority and rail operator SMRT said the two-hour shutdown was to eliminate telecommunication signals as a possible cause of a mysterious technical glitch that has bugged the five-year-old line since Monday.

"This temporary suspension of mobile communication services will affect commuters only while they are travelling in the underground tunnels along these four stations and on the stations' underground platforms while waiting for train arrivals," the joint statement read.

"They will not be able to make mobile phone calls, SMS or access the Internet during the suspension. Commuters who need to make urgent phone calls can approach SMRT staff at the Passenger Service Centre in each station for assistance."

Senior Transport Correspondent Christopher Tan replies:

Signalling refers to a broad range of systems which allow trains to run safely. In the Circle Line, the trains are fitted with a communications-based train control "moving block" signalling system.

Using telecommunication signals to "talk", the trains are able to keep a safe distance from each other, irrespective of speeds. Compared to a "fixed block" system, a "moving block" system is more sophisticated, and it allows trains to run closer to each other.

The North-East Line - which is driverless like the Circle Line - runs on a similar system. The North-South, East-West lines are also converting to this system.

In addition, the Circle Line has an automatic train protection system to govern train speed, an automatic train supervision system to track and schedule trains, and another system that prevents incorrect signals to be set.

They all form many pairs of "eyes" and "ears" of the network. It is unusual for a system with such a high redundancy to trip up.

Yet, that has been happening the whole of this week. Because of an unknown signal interference in the tunnels, communication between trains and track is lost intermittently. This has the effect of a train going blind and deaf momentarily, and causes yet another fail-safe system to kick in - the emergency brakes.

This just shows that some certain people are reading this thread . And need bro SiaSuay to make an observation to start them looking into it . And I hope whoever is reading this please get Desmond Kuek to resign from his post . It is no shame to admit that he is incapable to solve all this technical problems . Even the former Transport Minister resigned with his reputation intact . Hopefully the SMRT will do the right thing and regain public confidence in the company .

That is also quite possible. Imaging a lot of insects flying around inside the tunnel . Can really cause a lot of disruptions.

What they should do is just to close the Circle Line for 1 day and conduct a thorough investigation . LTA will be tasked to certify if the Circle Line is safe to travel or not . Better to be safe than sorry .
