Circle Line glitch-free since Friday evening

Published 4 hours ago

Christopher Tan

Senior Transport Correspondent

SINGAPORE - They say no news is good news, and that certainly seems to apply to the Circle Line.

The line has been operating normally since Friday evening following a string of delays last week.

Since last Monday morning, service on the five-year-old MRT line had been glitchy because a mysterious interference in the tunnels was creating havoc with the trains' signalling system.

A signalling system ensures that trains operate safely.

But as of Friday 4pm (Sept 2), the interfering pulses have ceased, and trains have been operating normally since, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and operator SMRT Corp on Monday (Sept 5).

SMRT's engineers have suspected a communications interference from the start of the anomaly, but were not been able to ascertain it.

Together with experts from both LTA and systems supplier Alstom, they nailed it down to an interference from an unknown source late last week.

"SMRT and LTA are continuing with the investigations," read a joint statement from LTA and SMRT. "Should and when an incident recur, SMRT and LTA have worked with the Infocomm Development Authority and mobile network operators to suspend telecommunication signals along stretches of the Circle Line for short periods of time for further tests.

Circle Line service back to normal after delays on Monday night

Published 1 hour ago

SINGAPORE - There were delays on the Circle Line at certain stations due to a track fault on Monday (Sept 5) night.

SMRT estimated that there would be 10 minutes additional travelling time from Paya Lebar to MacPherson stations in the direction of HarbourFront, in an alert on Twitter at about 8.30pm.

The delay was shortened to five minutes at around 9pm.

Train services were back to normal, SMRT said at about 9.15pm.
There were frequent delays on the Circle Line last week due to a signalling glitch, but the line had been operating normally since Friday evening.

SMRT's engineers suspected a communications interference from the start of the anomaly, but could not locate its source.

Train service on Circle Line delayed due to track fault: SMRT

SINGAPORE: Services along the Circle Line were temporarily delayed on Monday evening (Sep 5) due to a track fault, according to SMRT. The public transport operator says service has since resumed.

SMRT said in a tweet at about 8.20pm that the issue affected train services between Paya Lebar and MacPherson stations in the direction of HarbourFront. No further details were given.

In an update at 9.13pm, SMRT tweeted that train services were operating normally once again.

This comes after the Circle Line saw delays due to "signalling issues" for five consecutive days last week.

Commuter Arvin Tunas, 30, told Channel NewsAsia that the train he was on started to slow down at about 8pm. It came to a stop while heading towards Nicoll Highway station after leaving Promenade station.

In the first place, despite all the cock ups, khaw won't b voted out. Since thats the case, desmond won't b sacked. So why should he resign? Dream on la

I bet smrt have to brief Lta n khaw regularly on wad they're doing. Maybe desmond have to brief khaw personally too.

Which means if inadequate, khaw will tell desmond to buck up. And cannot b not enough money ok. So he won't b sacked.

Only way is desmond declare himself the new opposition candidate la

Of course khaw won't be voted out . He is safe until the next election . How can Desmond buck up ? Even if LTA and Khaw provides Desmond with all the resources to solve the problems the fact that problems are still happening . When someone is incompetent in his job the obvious is to let him go . I can bet you that SMRT will be liability to the PAP government. The longer Desmond stays on his job the more he has to answer to his masters . The more commuters will be fed up with the services . I also hope that Khaw is not planning to increase the transport fares soon when problems have not been resolved . Really I also begin to wonder what else are they hiding .

SMRT shareholders to vote on Temasek buyout on Sep 29

Posted 06 Sep 2016 11:51
Updated 06 Sep 2016 12:00

SINGAPORE: SMRT shareholders will vote on Temasek Holdings' proposed buyout of the public transport company on Sep 29.

In a filing to the Singapore Exchange (SGX), SMRT said the proposed arrangement was for Belford, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek, to acquire the 46 per cent of SMRT that Temasek does not already own.

The offer price is S$1.68, as stated by Temasek when it first announced the offer in July. This price, which an independent financial adviser (IFA) of SMRT has assessed to be "fair and reasonable so far as the scheme shareholders are concerned", will not be increased, the transport operator said.

SMRT's IFA, Rothschild, has recommended that shareholders vote in favour of the scheme at the meeting, or sell their shares in the open market if they are able to obtain a higher price.

Will this be another bad investment by Temasek ? Why would any investor buy over SMRT when it is full of technical problems which have not been resolved ?

Wahlan!!! You read but don't get it

I'm saying whether elections are held now or two years later, khaw WON'T be voted out.

As hated as mah was, he wasn't voted out.
No garbagement minister was ever voted out cos they're fcuking idiots or everyone hated them. Including hairdo lim.

Even if Wp compile a list of all mrt breakdowns n a clip of all khaws talking cocks, he still won't b voted out. So all mrt breakdowns are not a liability. Maybe garbagements votes will drop but it doesn't mean khaw will b sacrificed.

The reason is very simple.
Sporeans don't dare.
Those stupid sporeans who think they're smart don't dare vote him out too cos they think opposition will do a worse job.

Desmond's case is more interesting.

Why do u think lui siam? Who will siam milions of dollars cos mrt is cursed or suay?

Obviously lui saw all the confidential documents saying smrt is fcuked. So its an inherent problem which can't b fixed by good management. And he knew there'll b continuous n even more breakdowns.

If that's the case, its not desmonds competence in issue.
Which means he won't b sacked.
And desmond probably saw the same documents lui saw. So if they scapegoat him, maybe he will whistle blow them.

Hairline cracks found on 11 Sengkang-Punggol LRT trains

Published 2 hours ago

Christopher Tan

Senior Transport Correspondent

SINGAPORE - Two months after hairline cracks were found on a fleet of MRT trains here, similar cracks have been found on 11 trains along the Sengkang-Punggol LRT.

The cracks, which were found on the undercarriage of the trains, do not compromise their ability to bear passenger weight, according to a joint statement by operator SBS Transit and the Land Transport Authority.

The trains were manufactured by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The joint statement said a fleetwide inspection was carried out in July - the month when cracks on 26 new MRT trains on the North-South and East-West lines came to light.

SBS Transit said the defects were on 11 of its first-generation Sengkang-Punggol LRT trains.

The 11 were immediately withdrawn from passenger service for replacement of their bogie frames - a part of the undercarriage - "as a precautionary measure".

Six of the 11 have since been restored and returned to service, and the remaining five are expected to be reinstated by middle of next month.

The joint statement said LRT services have not been affected as there are 57 trains in the Sengkang-Punggol fleet, and a maximum of 36 trains are deployed at any one time.

You want the true reason, they need to have independent inquiry.

Won't b surprised the real reason is mrt is not equipped to handle so many people and trips.

And If the blame is cast clearly on garbagement, you think they'll tell the whole world?
