Well Sam, its always easy to be critical of others, and even easier to adopt a holier-than-thou attitude on a commercial sex forum. But sometimes it reeks of hypocrisy when the one standing on a soap box runs the racket... Kinda like a pimp preaching against prostitution.

But please bear in mind, you are Singaporean (unless you have changed citizenship), you seem to embody certain less than admirable qualities (judgemental, arrogant, general all round prissiness in correcting spelling mistakes), and you do fit a certain stereotype: The self hating Singaporean who thinks everything foreign is better.

I've lived in several countries all around the world, and generally find Singapore no better nor worse than any other cosmopolitan city.

Just as your forum members amuse you, sometimes you amuse me.

I'm not claiming sainthood.

All I ask is for those use the forum not to start threads that are totally off topic.

When off topic threads are started, I set up a system whereby 5 harmless points, not 5 cents, not 5 dollars, not even 5 peanuts, are deducted for each off topic post and an innocuous remark "Participating in an off topic thread - sam" is included in the rep remarks so that members know why the points have been deducted and where the deduction came from.

In most other forums, off topic stuff is deleted outright by the moderators. I allow it to remain as I respect the time and effort the threadstarter put in to compose and post the thread and for the work put in by those who reply with helpful information.

In return for my lenient and easy going treatment of off topic messages, I get a thread http://sgsbf.social/matters...ms-mother.html dedicated to me which sprouts fancy prose about a Bangla screwing my mum and how my mum is worse than a dog.

If this was a one off incident or something that occurs once in a blue moon, I would hesitate to generalise. However, the sad fact is that I receive similar PMs on a regular basis whenever I zap a member for what I consider to be a breach of the rules.

I used to receive similar treatment in real life when I lived in Singapore.

EG, when I saw someone smoking in a non smoking area. I'd go up to the person and POLITELY request that he/she put out the smoko. 99% of the time, I'd get abused in return. Often, I got challenged to a fight. NOT ONCE did I ever get compliance or an apology!!!!

Things have deteriorated to the point where civil behaviour has gone out the window! Singaporeans don't even have the balls to confront errant behaviour anymore. All they do is take pictures and send the images to STOMP!

While I would be the first to admit that no country is perfect, I can say from first hand experience that the same does not happen in all the places I have lived in since I left that sorry Island.

Create any forum where the members are vested in a point system, and of course you'll have hurt feelings when those points are taken away. Being offensive online is not exactly unique to this fair island as well.

As to your example about smoking, well, its all about the approach. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but given some of the rather preachy comments on this board, I fear that you might have confronted these individuals about their smoking with a rather, "I'm right you're wrong" heavy-handed approach... I find most Singaporeans, other than the young (who are naturally belligerent at heart at that age, weren't we all) will bend over backwards to follow the rules as long as you allow them some modicum of "face".

At the end of the day, and I make this point every now and then, I just think its quite interesting that you are so critical of the people who fuel the success of the website you created...

Come now do you actually expect me to believe that Singaporeans come to this forum to support "Sam Leong"??? They're driven here by the most primeval of urges. Nothing more.. nothing less.

To those who are here, I am forever grateful to the few who have helped me in setting up the forum, making invaluable suggestions with regards to improvements, helping to write articles, FAQs etc.

I am also forever critical of those who do nothing but create extra work and heartache by doing their level best to exploit the system, post absolute rubbish, pollute the content with spam and generally make running the forum a real headache on a day to day basis.

I'm sad to say that the 2nd category outnumber the helpful ones by a ratio of 1000 to 1.

The points system was implemented as a simple means of expressing gratitude of disapproval of a post. It was never meant to end up the way it has as a sort of on line caste system.

When it was first implemented, the nicks of those who "added" or "zapped" was automatically included in the user CP. The end result was that on line wars actually spilled out into the real world where members were threatened with physical violence for a points deduction. (Just as I have been for zapping an off topic thread which ignited this whole debate yet again.) I thought to myself "This is CRAZY!!!! Members are actually organising real life blood and gore gang warfare over some insignificant on line points that can't be redeemed for ANYTHING in the real world !!!!????".

I mulled over whether to remove the whole points system but by that time, it was already entrenched and removing it would have probably caused even more carnage. I therefore did the next best thing and made the votes anonymous.

I still ask myself on a daily basis... "what on earth has happened to the country to the extent that I have to protect the identity of on line votes in order to make the system viable!".

It has nothing to do with different viewpoints. My happiness is intact. I have numerous other interests that bring me great satisfaction.

It's just that as far as this forum is concerned, I'm kind of disillusioned and disappointed with regards to how things have unfolded over the years.

Running this place is no longer stimulating. It's become a chore. Perhaps I should pass the reins on to someone who is more enthusiastic and who can inject new ideas and take the site to the next level.

Dear Boss,

I am not an apple polisher nor a bullish old man. Please allow me to give my two cent worth. I have been in this forum since the Delphi Days (in late December), and I love the forum as it gives us opportunities to exchange ideas, information, tips to avoid potential dangers, etc. I am still trying to give my humble 2 cent worth, and of course being naughty, I do use the forum to chit chat with fellow friends （we call them Samsters, see how the adjective SAM is used even proudly in this case). Helas! like every forum, it could be subjected to wrong usage.

To insult someone's family member is a lowly act that we should avoid at all time. In the good old days, like during the 60' and 70's, a fight would have happened immediately if the parties involved were present. Hence, it should not be done at all cost. In this aspect, I concur with your view.

However, I am rather perturbed that you have taken this incident at hand, to give negative comments to the whole country, no matter how small it is. Like some of the brothers here, I have stayed in several countries for extended periods of time. Singapore might not be the best, but it is definitely not in a deplorable state that you have stated. I am sure many of us here do not agree with the person who has thrown insult on your family members. We are citizens of this small island state. We love our country as it provides us with the basic necessities and a good environment for most of us to grow up so that you can even stand up and face people from developed countries at equal term. Having said that, like a Chinese saying goes "one type of rice feeds million differnt kinds of people". We cannot, therefore expect everyone in this country to be the same, and especially belongs to the type that you would like to have.
