Interesting thread. Agree with many opinions voiced here. Bad news is this: -
Its gonna get worse.

There WILL be more rich people in SGP soon. At least for the near future. Policies put in place now and laws changed recently are all geared towards bringing foreign money into SGP. That means more and more mega rich folks here. By mega rich, I mean people who can buy up a few floors of "The Sail".

The impact is that there WILL be a greater disparity between have and have nots.

The consequence on cheonging? Rest assured rich folks also have to get their fun. Top end KTVs and FLs will get more expensive - just like any other sectors in retail. Mid-level stuff will inch upwards. GL packages will follow sooner or later.

The big question is: - Will general income levels also follow the up ward trend?

Of course the above is all conjecture. But I think it will happen.

This is the Lee's policy; the Elites. They are only interested in the rich, the successful, the powerful. Those not in these categories are considered a hindrance to their plans, hindrance to advancement. Therefore, if u not in these categories, u will naturally wanna find a place where u are more comfortable (likely quit & get out), they will continue to attract Talents from other countries. From a macro point of view, it is a phenomenon of renewal & replacement.

Look at the "good" old days when SDU is setup. It's meant for matchmaking the graduates, cos Old Mr Lee believes tat U-never-study (university mispronounced) grads are intelligent, the children they produce will be intelligent too (whether the child inherits from the father or mother, since both are grads. Otherwise, sekali the child inherit from the non-grad parent, then it's a risk to Mr Lee).

It's only several years later, when marriage & birth rates are declining, that SDS is setup to matchmake non-U-never-study pple. But, why still the divide? 1 major reason is cos he doesn't want the grads' "resource" to risk being wasted; by getting hitched wif a non-grad, if the child inherit from the non-grad parent, then this grad's "resource" is wasted liao.

Not intending to insult, look at the U-never-study SGPean grads today (I'm oso a grad, but my results not good enuf, I din manage 2 get into SG's U-never-study, so I did it in Aussie). How street-smart are they? Yes, academically, they are intelligent, have good grades.

I share this view with you...university grads lack a certain edge, especially when it comes to common sense. The older generation (from my experiences with my elders) seem to have the impression that uni grads are supposed to be a breed above laymen, an opinion that pains me every time I hear the esteem and awe bestowed on grads.

I have friends that hail from the creme of the local education system but quite frankly, I wonder what the hype is about? The Hwa Chongs, the NJCs, etc...their grades are excellent, they give you the impression there is only one letter in the alphabet but beyond the comfort zone of what they have been indoctrinated, they don't readily have answers for very mundane day-to-day matters. I can even extent the argument to our scholarship system, based on my previous working experience, but I think that's a topic for another day.

Am not being sour grapes griping here and like yourself, I had to graduate from an Australian university because the quota to the local universities from the polytechnic stream was really limited.

To you all reading my ramblings, I apologise for maybe being a little off topic (I use 'maybe' because I have not followed the thread from the start). I am posting because I think some of us need to know there is really nothing that terribly special to have gone to university. Anyone can make it through university with due diligence. Believe me, I have had classmates who messed about all the way till the exams and still scrape through. Don't feel inadequate just because our local employers are paper-centric when it comes to employment. There are many successful people out there that started without a degree. A degree doesn't guarantee you success, but with hard work, the sky's the limit.
