SIA faces dilemma over its stake in Virgin Australia

SINGAPORE — Singapore Airlines has a decision to make: Throw more cash at Virgin Australia Holdings, which has burned up shareholder wealth in four of the past five years, or risk an unwelcome rival muscling in.

A power-sharing agreement at Australia’s second-largest airline — owned almost equally by Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways and Singapore Air — unexpectedly fractured last month when the New Zealand carrier said it was considering putting its stake up for sale.

Singapore Air and Etihad may have to increase their holdings or jointly buy the stake so neither gains an edge. Air New Zealand’s 25.9 per cent stake in Virgin Australia is worth about US$249 million (S$336 million), a fraction of Singapore Air’s US$3.2 billion (S$4.3 billion) in cash.

“Arguably Virgin Australia hasn’t been a good investment for everyone,” said Mr Brendan Sobie, a Singapore-based analyst at CAPA Centre for Aviation. “But strategically for Singapore Air, a case can be made that they would need to increase their stake.”

7 Malaysian airlines to form new association

Malaysia Airlines Berhad, MASwings, Firefly, AirAsia Berhad, AirAsia X Berhad, Malindo Air and Berjaya Air are amongst the founding airlines of the association.

SINGAPORE: Seven Malaysian air carriers have joined forces to form the Association of Malaysian Air Carriers (AMAC), according to a joint statement issued on Thursday (Apr 14).

Malaysia Airlines Berhad, MASwings, Firefly, AirAsia Berhad, AirAsia X Berhad, Malindo Air and Berjaya Air are the founding airlines of the association, which will be open to all Malaysian air carriers.

According to AMAC, the association will provide a common platform to discuss issues affecting the airline industry. It will also represent common industry interests among institutions such as the Ministry of Transport, Department of Civil Aviation and the Malaysian Aviation Commission.
