SIA's full-year net profit surges nearly 119% to S$804m



SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) on Thursday (May 12) reported a nearly 119 per cent jump in full-year net profit to S$804 million.

In a news release, SIA said the performance was a result of lower net fuel costs which compensated for weaker yields, and "strong growth" at SilkAir and Scoot.

Group revenue was S$15,228 million, down 2.2 per cent from last year, mainly because of lower passenger revenue and lower cargo revenue. This was compensated in part by higher revenue from subsidiary airlines and income earned upon the release of seven A350-900 delivery slots, said SIA.

Group expenditure fell 4 per cent to S$14,547 million, because of a drop in average jet fuel price.

Group net profit for the fourth quarter was S$224 million, an improvement of S$184 million compared to the same period last year.

SilkAir reported a S$50 million year-on-year improvement in operating performance, primarily due to a S$64 million increase in passenger revenue, supported by its 11.1 per cent growth in passenger carriage, according to the news release.

Meanwhile, Scoot marked its first full-year operating profit since commencing operations, improving S$95 million year-on-year. Passenger revenue rose S$106 million from 29.1 per cent growth in traffic.

The board has recommended a final dividend of 35 cents per share for the financial year.

FLEET AND ROUTE DEVELOPMENT

SIA also said it expects to take delivery of 13 A350-900s in the 2016-2017 financial year, of which 12 are expected to be in service by March 2017. Four A330-300s and one 777-300 are planned to be returned to lessors, bringing SIA's fleet size to 109 aircraft by the end of the financial year.

SIA will add three destinations, with thrice-weekly A350-900 Dusseldorf service from Jul 21 and four-times-weekly 777-200 Canberra-Wellington service from Sep 20. There will also be increased flight frequencies to Bangkok, Colombo, Milan and Brisbane, said the news release.

SYDNEY: A Jetstar and an AirAsia plane came dangerously close to a midair collision after taking off from the Gold Coast, China’s Xinhua news agency reported Australian authorities as saying.

The incident which happened on Thursday morning (Jul 28) has prompted an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

It was reported that the AirAsia plane came within 152 metres of a Jetstar flight that was about to land, causing alarms to sound in both planes’ cockpits.

The minimum vertical separation for major passenger aircraft in Australia is 305 metres. The incident occurred north of Coolangatta airport in Queensland.

Jetstar pilots were forced to take evasive action as the AirAsia plane encroached on its flight path, putting their aircraft into a climb to avert a possible catastrophe.

A Jetstar spokesman told NewsCorp that pilots of their A320, which can carry 180 passengers took corrective action to restore the safe distance between the two aircraft and landed on the Gold Coast without further incident.

AirAsia representatives have yet to comment on the incident. The AirAsia A330 airbus involved in the incident was on its way to New Zealand from the Gold Coast.

Japan’s ANA completes purchase of Vietnam Airlines stake: report

apan’s ANA Holdings has completed a US$108 million deal to buy an 8.8 percent stake in Vietnam Airlines, news website Deal Street Asia reported Thursday.

Vietnam Airlines reportedly will hold an extraordinary meeting prior to September 30 in order to elect ANA representatives to the board, and adopt a plan to increase charter capital by issuing additional shares to its existing shareholders.

Under the strategic partnership, the two airlines will launch codeshare arrangements, which will cover 30 major domestic routes within Japan and Vietnam and 10 international routes between the two countries.

Vietnam Airlines has said it will continue to look for potential investors to cut the state ownership to 65 percent.

The Vietnamese carrier sold 49 million shares, or a 3.5 percent stake, in an IPO in November 2014 for about $51.3 million.

Chief Executive Officer Pham Ngoc Minh told Bloomberg in April that the airline expected to list its shares on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange “later this year” after closing the deal with ANA and fulfilling some procedural requirements of the exchange.
