Interfering signal detected in Circle Line tunnel: SMRT, LTA

SINGAPORE: An interfering signal in the Circle Line tunnel, within the operating frequency band of the trains' signalling system, could be the cause of disruptions to normal train service in the past week, SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in a joint statement on Saturday (Sep 3).

The interfering signal could be a possible cause of the intermittent loss of train-to-track communications but experts have not yet been able to verify the source, SMRT and LTA stated. The Circle Line has seen trains slowing down during peak hours for five consecutive days, due to issues with the signalling system.


On Friday, SMRT announced it would switch off mobile signals at four Circle Line stations for two hours the same evening, “to eliminate telecommunication signals as a possible cause” and more tests were also conducted throughout the night between 1 am and 4 am.


“However, as there was no incident last evening, the tests were inconclusive. In fact, since 4 pm yesterday, there has not been any intermittent loss of signal communication of train-to-track communications,” SMRT and LTA said.

SINGAPORE - An interfering signal in the Circle Line tunnel is the possible cause of a signalling glitch that has plagued the MRT line this week.

However, more investigation is required into the matter, and further temporary shutdowns of mobile service on the line are possible.

"This interfering signal could be a possible cause of the intermittent loss of train-to-track communications," the SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.

"However, experts have not been able to verify the source."

The signal is "within the operating frequency band of the signalling system", SMRT said in a statement on Saturday (Sept 3) evening.

Mobile signals in four Circle Line stations, Kent Ridge, Haw Par Villa, Pasir Panjang and Labrador Park, were shut down for two hours on Friday evening to investigate the issue.

More tests were also conducted throughout the night between 1 am and 4 am, and investigations are continuing, said SMRT.

However, the tests were inconclusive as there was no recurrence of the signal loss last night. The "intermittent loss of signal communication" has not occurred since 4pm on Friday, SMRT said.

Should and when an incident recurs, telecommunication signals along stretches of the Circle Line will be suspended for short periods of time for further tests.

"If temporary telecommunication signal suspensions have to be carried out, there will be in-train and station announcements along the affected stretches," said SMRT.

"We seek commuters' understanding and patience as we press on in our investigations."

And I hope whoever is reading this please get Desmond Kuek to resign from his post . It is no shame to admit that he is incapable to solve all this technical problems . Even the former Transport Minister resigned with his reputation intact . Hopefully the SMRT will do the right thing and regain public confidence in the company .

The most important thing the cb media never ask or smrt say 'no comments'.

What's the source/origin of interference signal.
Should b easy to determine.
Cannot b due to Starbucks turn on their free WiFi.
Prob come from smrt la.

And how come other countries using same system don't have all these problems? If have, the vendor will b damn jialat liao.

Won't b resigning unless the train derail n drop on road n explode n he's responsible

They'll solve the problem like how they solve haze.
The media will b told not to report.
No point reporting cos by the time they report, problem will be solved.
So no point affecting confidence in public transport

Good points you brought up . Now they are saying that the interference signal is inside the tunnel . Really ? The tunnel is so deep how is it possible ?

Since now they are testing out the signals let me further analysis the situation .

We all know that there are many frequencies issued by IDA for different purposes . IDA issued these frequencies to the following :

1) Telco
2) Radio
3) walki talkie
5) Internet

All require a certain frequency to operate . Since they have detected the interference they should have a rough idea which band of frequencies that that is interfering their signal .

1) They should just go into the tunnel and check it out . There is no shame to close the Circle Line for 1 day .

2) Check your sending and receiving equipment for the signals .

3) Check out the source of the interfering signal . I am sure there are such tools available. .


Hope all this helps . If all else fails after what you have done you need to think of something else . There could be a breach of security .

That is why Desmond Kuek needs to step down from office . On his watch already 2 person lives lost . Countless of mrt breakdowns. doors not opening ; train not stopping at designated station ; waterfall inside train ; smoke inside train ; train cracks on 36 coaches ... the list goes on and on . Will he take full responsibility if any more people die or gets injured ??? It is no shame to admit that you can't solve the problem and resign now . Just like the former Transport Minister resigned.
